The temple wood: why red sandalwood colours Rubis

Every family of the Maison takes its colour from the active itself. Nothing is added to look beautiful. For Rubis, the face family, that colour comes from red sandalwood, Pterocarpus santalinus.

Its heartwood holds santalins, among the very few red pigments in nature that dissolve in oil. Left to rest in oil, the wood gives a deep, translucent crimson, closer to a ruby than to a rose. It is the wood of the temples of southern India, and red sandalwood with rose water has been a facial ritual of the Indian courts for centuries.

The Maison pairs it with rose seed oil, in the same spirit: the court’s ritual, kept whole. When you see the colour of a Rubis creation, you are seeing the wood.
